Ströh de Martínez, C., et al. (2016): Food security in sub-Saharan Africa: a fresh look on agricultural mechanisation; how adapted financial solutions can make a difference, in: German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), Studies 91.
To advance global efforts toward food security and sustainable development, we contributed to a study conducted within two research projects by the German Development Institute (DIE): Promoting Food Security in Rural Sub-Saharan Africa and Mobilising Capital for Sustainable Development. Both projects, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), examine how agricultural intensification, social protection, and innovative financing can jointly address hunger and poverty.
The study explores how tailored financial solutions—such as value chain finance and adapted credit instruments—can support agricultural mechanisation and productivity among smallholders. Embedded within the SEWOH initiative “One World, No Hunger,” it connects research on sustainable agriculture, social security, and capital mobilisation to practical approaches for improving livelihoods in fragile rural contexts. The work also contributes to the AgriFiP knowledge platform, fostering dialogue between the agricultural and financial sectors to promote effective, inclusive financing models.
